2008-2009 Chief Executive Leadership Award Recipient

Dr. Charles Steger
President, Virginia Tech

CASE District III honored Dr. Charles Steger, president of Virginia Tech, with its 2009 Chief Executive Leadership Award during the February 10 Plenary Session.  The award recognizes an outstanding president, chancellor, head master or system head of a District III CASE member institution who has created vision and been inspirational to others, led the institution to higher levels of success and increased its stature, encouraged innovation and risk-taking among employees, and is supportive of all aspects of institutional advancement.  

Dr. Steger is the 15th president of Virginia Tech, the university where he earned his bachelor and master’s degrees in architecture and a Ph.D. in engineering.  After working as a professional architect and planner, Steger’s passion for teaching led him to return to Virginia Tech to teach in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.  He subsequently served as Dean of that college and Vice President for Development and University Relations before being named President in 2000.  Under President Steger’s leadership, the university has charted a course to expand its research enterprise and establish Virginia Tech among the nation’s top research universities. 

Among his most recent publications are book chapters on the topics of the business of education and the university presidency.  He is a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects.  He was recognized by the Virginia Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals as the 1999 Outstanding Fundraising Executive.  In 2002, the National Conference for Community and Justice awarded him the NCCJ Humanitarian Award.  The New Century Technology Council awarded him its 2004 Compass Award for visionary thinking and leadership in the field of information technology.  In 2006, he was invited to give a presentation on “Transforming Education to Meet Global Challenges” at the Public Services Summit@Nobel Week 2006 sponsored by Cisco Systems and the City of Stockholm. 

He recently finished a term as chairman of the Virginia Council of Presidents and has been appointed by four Governors of Virginia to serve on various boards dealing with higher education, homeland security, information technology, and international education.  In addition, he serves on the boards of a number of public and private organizations, including the Senior Advisory Group of the Northern Virginia Technology Council Board of Directors.  He is also President of the Council of Presidents of the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) and Chairman of their Executive Committee.

Established in 1999, the Chief Executive Leadership Award provides opportunity for CASE to applaud and promote the creative and difficult work of our top educational executives. Each year CASE District III members are invited to nominate chief executives whose contributions to their campuses and communities deserve exceptional notice and praise.
